“I need to get some fresh air”, a common idiom used to express the need to step outside, often for mental relief before completely losing your…temper. This saying dates back centuries, as people have long associated fresh air with health and well-being. So, what I’m about to tell you won’t be a huge revelation, but if you’ve been feeling a bit suffocated, it might just be the reminder you need.
Fun Fact: During the 19th century, fresh air was considered a cure for many ailments, and doctors prescribed outdoor walks, seaside visits, and even sanatorium stays for conditions like tuberculosis.
I don’t know about you, but something about stepping into nature instantly lifts my spirit. Whether it’s the fresh scent of pine trees, the rhythmic crash of waves, or the soft rustling of leaves in the breeze, nature makes me feel more at peace. But the question I’ll be exploring today is why it has such a profound effect on our happiness.
A Break from the Chaos
Modern life is noisy, stressful, and often overwhelming. I spend so much time staring at screens, answering emails, and rushing from one task to another that some weeks, I rarely take a moment to breathe. Sound familiar? Nature offers an escape - a place where I can disconnect from the digital world and simply be present. It came as no surprise when I found out that studies have shown that time in nature reduces stress and anxiety, allowing our minds to reset and recharge.
There’s actual science to back up why being in nature makes us happier, I’ll talk about this in more detail later.
A Natural Mood Booster - Connection and Perspective
It’s not just about relaxation - nature actively makes us happier. The simple act of being outdoors encourages physical activity, whether it’s walking, hiking, cycling, or even just pottering about in the garden. Exercise releases endorphins, which contribute to feelings of happiness and well-being. Plus, being surrounded by natural beauty can inspire awe and gratitude, shifting our focus away from worries and toward appreciation.
For me, spending time outdoors reminds me that I’m part of something bigger. Watching the waves roll in, gazing up at the stars, or walking through an ancient woodland can be humbling in the best possible way. It puts my problems into perspective and helps me feel more connected to the world, to others, and myself.
Bringing More Nature into Daily Life
Not everyone has access to vast green spaces or sprawling countryside, but even small doses of nature can make a difference. Houseplants, weekend trips to the beach or countryside, or simply sitting in a local park can all provide a much-needed boost. The key is to make time for nature, however and whenever possible.
If you’re feeling a little overwhelmed, step outside. Breathe in the fresh air, listen to the birds, and let nature do what it does best - make you happier.
Connection to Nature & the Human Body
As I mentioned earlier, I delved into this a little deeper and found scientific research that supports the idea that fresh air and time in nature have numerous benefits for the human body and mind:
Improved Oxygen Intake – Outdoor air (especially in green spaces) tends to have higher oxygen levels, which can enhance brain function, reduce stress, and improve energy levels.
Reduced Stress & Anxiety – Studies show that being in nature reduces levels of cortisol (the stress hormone), leading to better mood and relaxation.
Better Lung Function – Indoor air can have pollutants and lower oxygen levels, whereas fresh air can help clear the lungs and improve respiratory health.
Boosted Immune System – Phytoncides (natural compounds released by trees) have been shown to boost immune cell activity, helping the body fight off infections.
Mental Clarity & Focus – Exposure to nature improves cognitive function, reducing mental fatigue and enhancing creativity.
So, when we say, "I need to get some fresh air," we are instinctively recognising the positive effects of stepping outside, whether for a mental reset, a breath of cleaner air, or a break from an indoor environment.

There’s something about birdwatching that absolutely captivates me. Being an early riser, I love catching the sunrise, and there’s nothing quite like watching a robin darting about the garden to start the day off right. But adding photography into the mix takes the experience to a whole new level, bringing even more appreciation and excitement.

Agree 💯 it's so important to go outside and get fresh air and connect with nature. I always instantly feel better when I do. Good reminder now that the seasons are changing 🙂
Reading this blog itself is a joy. Unlike in these modern times, people used to spend plenty of time in nature itself. Since we are all products of nature, there is always a profound intimacy with it. The joy that comes out of being in nature has no comparison. The Photographs are wonderful.
