I have a ton of woodpeckers here in NJ, but not this one! I've seen the pileated woodpecker, the red-bellied woodpecker, the hairy woodpecker, and the downy woodpecker.

Oh wow, that's quite a variety! I've only ever seen a Great Spotted and a Green Woodpecker.

I loved your post thank you. So interesting. Here in SA we have a number of different woodpeckers, was great learning about a new one.

Not where I live, although very occasionally bump into one in a nearby wetland where I walk. We have to go into the more protected areas to find them.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a woodpecker in real life but what gorgeous birds. I always think it’s such a shame the women of most species get duller as they get older (except humans of course!) - seems very unfair!!

Yes I agree but the males look beautiful. I've only seen the female a handful of times, it always seems to be the males around here. I hope you've had a good weekend.

Wow! Thank you for such an educational read this morning, and your close up photo's are stunning. We definitely have Woodpeckers in the Churchyard near where we live, I can hear them on my dog walks in the Springtime. I'm inspired to take some binoculars along now and hopefully get a closer look. I love Greater Spotted Woodpeckers. We have two that visit regularly- especially for peanuts. They are very wary though, flying off at the slightest movement, so I struggle to photograph them!

Hi Linda, I'm pleased that you get to experience Woodpeckers in your garden. They do seem like quite nervous birds, I have to photograph them from our conservatory window 😂
