Today’s post is a follow-up to my earlier article “Hello Autumn - The Change in Seasons”
As autumn’s crisp air gives way to the deeper chill of winter, a quiet transformation begins to unfold in the woodland. The vibrant colours that once painted the landscape slowly fade, replaced by muted tones and droplets of dew that sit delicately on the fallen leaves. Each morning brings a subtle shift - a softening of hues, a gentler light, and the first hints of winter approach. There’s a quiet magic in the air as the woodland prepares for the cold, drawing our cosy cottage further into a world of stillness and quiet each day. The woodland floor now blanketed in rustling leaves, feels as if it’s holding its breath, awaiting the first snow. Winter is just around the corner, and with it, the promise of serene, frosted landscapes and fireside warmth.
An Explosion of Colour
At first, the woodland canopy offered a subtle hint of change, with the leaf edges turning from deep green to soft yellows and ambers. It started slow – almost like a teaser of the beauty yet to come. With each passing day, the woodland grew more vibrant. A chorus of golds, reds, and oranges sang together. Their leaves shimmered in the morning sun, casting a warm glow across the woodland floor, which now forms a radiant carpet, crunching underfoot.
Walking in Autumn’s Glory
One of my most enjoyable moments of autumn is the simple pleasure of walking through the woods. Each path has transformed with the season, and no two trails look the same from one day to the next. Sunlight filters through the thinning leaves, casting patterns onto the ground. There’s a rich smell in the air – a mix of earth, moss, and the slightly smoky scent of log burners and open fires. As the days progress, fungi dot the trails, adding their earthy tones to the woodland landscape.
Every so often, a gust of wind will send a flurry of leaves to the ground, a natural confetti that fills the air with colour and movement. The sound of squirrels playing in the leaves and the distant call of birds migrating overhead add a peaceful soundtrack to the visual splendour. Standing in the midst of it all feels like stepping into a painting.
The Magic of Sunrise and Twilight
Twilight in autumn has a magic all of its own. As the sun dips behind the trees, the light softens, casting a rosy hue over the landscape. Shadows grow long, and the colours seem even more intense in the fading light, giving the entire woodland an ethereal quality. From the window of the cottage, I watch as the last light lingers on the treetops, painting the woodland in deep golds and purples.
Morning, too, has its special beauty. The woods are often shrouded in a fine mist, and the dew clings to spider webs, creating tiny prisms that catch the early light. With a steaming cup of coffee in hand, I watch from my kitchen window as the wildlife wakes up. The mist and the colours blend together to create a soft, dreamlike atmosphere that is somehow calming and invigorating all at once.

A Time for Reflection
As I mentioned in my last article, the shifting colours of autumn bring a certain sense of reflection. Nature’s transformation is a reminder of life’s changing seasons, of letting go to make way for new beginnings. Watching the leaves fall, one by one, is a gentle nudge to appreciate life’s transience, to find beauty in every moment. It’s a season that encourages cosiness, warmth, and a slower pace. In our woodland cottage, with the woodland outside the window, it’s easy to feel in sync with this rhythm.
Soon, winter will settle in, and the woods will change once more, resting until spring breathes new life into them. But for now, the autumn colours still linger, leaving us with a quiet sense of gratitude for nature’s endless cycles.

Such a lovely piece, Jenna, thank you! Very inspirational 🍂✨❤️
We popped out for a walk on Friday afternoon expecting to take some nice autumnal photos, but alas, almost all the trees were bare! It seems to have changed so quickly - on the one hand, it feels like autumn never came, and on the other, it seems to have transitioned unnoticed! 🍂🍁
