March has arrived, and I’ve greeted it with open arms! The sunshine has been an absolute treat, and the garden is bursting into life - quite literally springing into action (pun very much intended).
This month has still brought the odd chilly morning and occasional downpour, but a real sense of life is returning to the flower pots and beds. The first brave buds are unfurling, and the birds are singing their hearts out - it’s the perfect time to get stuck in with the garden! Here’s what’s happening in my little patch of paradise this month.
The Girls are Back in Business: Fresh Eggs at Last!
At long last, the hens have decided to get back to work! After a winter of freeloading, they’ve finally started laying again, and I couldn’t be more delighted. There’s nothing quite like collecting fresh eggs on a crisp March morning, still warm from the nest. The girls seem just as pleased with themselves, clucking proudly as if they’ve achieved something truly remarkable - which, to be fair, they have! Omelettes, cakes, and dippy eggs with soldiers are back on the menu, and I’m savouring every golden-yolked moment. Here’s to longer days, happy hens, and a well-stocked egg basket!
Herbs: Tiny but Mighty
Are anyone’s herb pots looking surprisingly perky for this time of year? The rosemary is in fine form, standing tall and fragrant as if winter had never happened. My chives are just beginning to sprout, promising plenty of garnish for future omelettes, and the sage and parsley are already trying to take over. I’ve also spotted the first tender leaves of lemon balm emerging, which means fresh herbal tea isn’t far off. It seems apparent that these hardy little plants just get on with it, no matter the weather!

Beautiful Budding Roses
March signals that it’s time to turn my attention to the roses, and I must say, I get real satisfaction from giving them some attention. Pruning time is necessary, invigorating, and hopefully leading to a fabulous show later on! My roses are stretching their thorny arms, ready to scramble up the stakes, and I’ve started filling their pots with a bit of well-rotted compost to give them a boost. The rose my colleagues bought me to commemorate Scruff’s passing is also beginning to bloom, and I can't wait to see how it looks. The roses may still look a little bare now, but I know that in just a few months, they’ll burst with blooms and scent the air with that classic English garden perfume.
Gooseberries
Scattered around the garden, my gooseberry bushes are quietly gearing up for another productive year. Right now, they’re all bare branches and tiny leaf buds, but I know that come summer, they’ll be dripping with tangy green and red fruit. Gooseberry bushes aren’t the flashiest plants, but they’re wonderfully rewarding. A bit of mulching this month will help them along. I’m looking forward to the sweet-tart taste of our homegrown gooseberries again - if the birds don’t get them first!
Summer Anticipation
March in our cottage garden is all about preparation and anticipation. It’s a month of tidying, pruning, and quietly encouraging everything to grow again. There’s still the odd frost to watch out for, but the promise of warmer days is just around the corner. Soon, there will be tulips, new shoots, and even more reasons to potter about the garden on a Sunday morning.

Nice post, Jenny.
It's a great time of year for gardens. My chives are looking great, and my strawberry plants are getting lots of new green leaves. My chard plants are also being very productive with lots of nice leaves for cooking.
Our chives are also coming to life - we’ve never had any success with parsley 🙈😂
