There’s something undeniably eerie about living in the woods - especially on those long winter nights when I’m alone, the rain pelting against the windows, and the wind howling through the trees. It’s easy to let my imagination run wild, conjuring up every spine-chilling scenario possible. But if I push past those creeping fears of unseen dangers lurking in the dark, I’m reminded of the sheer magic of it all - especially when the spring arrives and wildlife wander through my garden, turning my world into something straight out of a fairy tale.
Earlier this month, as the beautiful spring light filtered through the trees, we were visited by an unexpected but delightful guest - a muntjac deer.
Muntjac are small, elusive creatures, often heard rustling through the undergrowth but rarely seen up close. Yet, there it was, standing in the woodland at the edge of our garden, its dark eyes wide with curiosity. With a sleek reddish-brown coat and delicate legs, the deer moved cautiously yet gracefully as it surveyed its surroundings.
At first, it seemed hesitant, its large ears twitching at every sound, but as we stayed still, it slowly ventured further in. It nibbled on fallen leaves with a gentle, almost timid manner. The sight of such a wild yet peaceful creature against the backdrop of the woodland felt like a scene from a countryside painting.
For a while, we simply watched in silence, marvelling at this unexpected encounter. The muntjac seemed at ease, perhaps reassured by the stillness of the afternoon. It stayed for several minutes before slipping back into the woodland, disappearing as quietly as it had arrived, leaving only a few delicate hoofprints in the damp earth.
These fleeting moments remind me of the beauty of coexisting with nature. Though muntjac are sometimes considered a nuisance for their fondness for garden plants, we couldn’t help but feel privileged to share our space with such a charming creature, even if only for a short while.
Perhaps it will return, or maybe another woodland visitor will take its place. Either way, days like these make country living all the more enchanting.
